Ceramics

Ceramics is what is known as treated glass, meaning the glass product is treated with a chemical to make it more durable (same thing with glasses and windows). When glass bottles are recycled, they are melted in a kiln. The chemical treatment means ceramics have a higher melting point, meaning if they are mixed with beer/wine bottles the entire load is contaminated. The most common outlet for treated glass right now (especially in the Northeast) is glass aggregate, meaning it's ground up and used as an additive for things like concrete or countertops (neither of which are technically "recycling"). Glass aggregate is also commonly used as a landfill cover, to prevent materials/odors from escaping landfills as new products are added.

Expanded Polystyrene (Known as Styrofoam, a Dow Product) Peanuts

Styrofoam is a brand name (Dow trademark) for the material expanded polystyrene. When plastic is expanded, air is injected into the resin to increase the padding (creating a foam exterior). This air can't be removed, so it's theoretically impossible to "recycle" Styrofoam (because you can't turn it into regular polystyrene). The best you can do is shred it into flakes and make new EPS, which is essentially reuse. Because it's usually cheaper to manufacturer new EPS from virgin plastic, the recycling market is limited. Dart is one of the largest US EPS "recyclers." Click here to visit their website.

SAFE (not-for-profit) will accept gently used stuffed animals, toys, children's books, and baby blankets that are clean and in good condition. SAFE cleans the stuffed animals and toys, and delivers them to children in emergency situations or donates them to other children's organizations, military organizations, libraries, and nursing homes. This is a mail in program. Click here to visit their website for more information and links to other organizations that accept stuffed animals.
