Purpose
The Soil Conservation Board was established by Town by-law in 1989 to control
and preserve the removal of soil, gravel, rock, and allied products thereto.
Within the Town of Acushnet, along its' river, is located the geologic formation
called the Long Plain, which is an outwash glacial deposit of sands and gravel.
This outwash plain is a valuable resource for the Town, and has commercial value
within the current economical development of the region. The Soil Conservation
Board (SCB) controls removal of the resource, along with the final use of the
land after the "earth" has been removed, through a permitting process. Each
permitted operator must post a performance bond which the Town holds to ensure
that the operational plan is followed, and to ensure that the property is left
in a beneficial, environmentally safe condition.
The Board
The members of the SCB are made-up of one member from the Board of Selectmen,
Planning Commission, Board of Health, Conservation Commission, and the Board of
Public Works. The current members are:
- Robert Medeiros - Board of Health, Chairman
- Leslie Dakin, Jr. - Board of Selectmen
- Marc Cenerizio - Planning Commission, Vice-Chairman
- Daniel Menard - Board of Public Works
- Ralph Urban - SCB Inspector (Board of Health)
- Merilee Kelly- Conservation Agent
For information about the Soil Conservation Board, meeting
notices, questions or complaints, please contact the SCB Inspector, Ralph Urban, at 508-998-0275. The SCB office is located in the Parting Ways
Building with the Board of Health, located at 130 Main Street.
